Picking Out a Wireless Home Surveillance Camera
0Wireless Home Surveillance Camera Guidelines
There are a surprising amount of cameras out there to choose from when you’re setting up a wireless home surveillance system and no one can give you a best recommendation until you know what your security camera needs are going to be.
So first we need to look at the types of cameras that are out there.
Types of Cameras
Dome Cameras: These are the ones that are usually seen in convenience stores and other places of commerce. They’re used because many of them provide a 360 degree turning radius and are used to give the security personnel a bird’s eye view of what’s happening around the store.
Garden variety: These are the ones that are sometimes stationary or sometimes are on a rotating access. Basically these are the box looking cameras that you often see at banks and smaller convenience stores. They are also set up higher to give a better overall view.
Hidden cameras: Not necessarily hidden, but these cameras are much smaller than the normal cameras you see every day. The best way to think about this are the cameras that are built into glasses, or the ones you see in spy movies and all that other stuff. These are good for getting up close and personal with someone and are usually used at more of an eye level.
Depending on the amount of space that you want to set up for surveillance will determine the type of camera that you want to buy. If you want to keep it hidden then the hidden spy cameras will give you what you need.
Camera Resolution
So after you’ve determined the type of camera that you want to use the next thing to think about is the resolution of the camera. After all if someone breaks into your home and your surveillance system catches them on camera but the resolution on the video is so bad that the authorities can’t even make out who it is then your home surveillance system will be a waste of time and money. A normal resolution will be around 480 lines and a good high resolution would start at 525. Anything lower than 480 will still give you a picture but not a good one. It all just depends on what you need from the recordings.
Camera Considerations
One main thing you should think about when you’re picking out a camera is what you’re actually intending to use it for. For instance stores usually use cameras as a deterrent for theft. In fact some stores have what appear to be cameras but they’re just there to create the illusion that you’re being watched, but in reality they’re just casings!
Also another thing to consider is thinking like a criminal and the places they look to steal from. So if you’re setting up a wireless home surveillance system you should consider the valuables in your room and where you put them. Most criminals know to look in the master bedroom, the freezer and also in the bathrooms where jewelry is often put. Also consider the size of these rooms and how much distance there should be.

Having someone breaking into your home is a terrifying thought that troubles many home and business owners though homeowners have more to fear since around 70% of all break-ins occur on residential property.
More astonishing is that a little bit over half of the break-ins take place right in broad daylight (10 a.m. – 3 p.m.) But now, with the creation of new technology, wireless home surveillance is a growing part of home security for many home and business owners.
Wireless Home Surveillance and 6 Other Ways to Keep Your Home Safe
• Try not to draw attention to your home. For instance, if you bought a brand new computer the other day don’t leave the new box sitting out by your garbage can in the street for everyone to see and for someone to possibly steal.
• Don’t leave things sitting out that someone can just walk away with. This means things like bikes, scooters, etc. If they’re just sitting outside unattended otherwise someone could literally walk away with your stuff.
• Open all the shades, curtains, etc. in your house and then take a walk around the outside of your home. Can you see anything like your brand new fancy TV or computer from all angles from the outside? If you can that may draw more attention to your home from would be burglars. Consider moving some stuff around so that your valuables aren’t as easily noticeable.
• Before you leave the house do a check and make sure that you or anyone else have left any windows opened, doors unlocked or anything. Older sliding glass doors usually pop off the door frame more easily but with newer door frames that doesn’t happen nearly as often. Instead the lock can be picked. So for more security add a steel bar behind the door, that way even if it does get picked the burglar still can’t open the door.
• An unkempt yard can be fantastic natural cover for burglars to use. Don’t give them the chance to use it against you. Not advocating turning your yard into a desert but just use some common sense. If the bushes are high and they’re planted up against your window, cut them down so that they can’t be used that way.
• Be known in the community. What this means is that if your neighbors know who you and your family are then they’re much more likely to be suspicious if anyone else comes snooping around your home and are more likely to alert law enforcement if they suspect a break in.
• Have some kind of wireless surveillance system installed in your home. This doesn’t necessarily mean you need video cameras but most alarm companies will have something that can fit your needs and your budget.
More often than not it will be simple common sense and vigilance that will keep your home safe from robberies and theft. Also no two homes are the same so take the time to really assess your property and think to yourself about how you would try to break in if you were a burglar and then consider ways that you can prevent that from happening. Also consider getting a wireless surveillance system, that way if someone does break into your home you may be able to find out who it is and have them brought to justice.

Wireless Home Surveillance Best Practices?
0The Best Places to Hide Your Wireless Home Surveillance Equipment
Home surveillance can be necessary when you fear that a nanny or caretaker can be possibly violating your trust and the rules that you have put forth in your home when it comes to certain behavior towards your loved ones and your possessions. That’s one of the reasons why some have take it upon themselves to take on the task of amateur espionage in their own homes to catch violations of trust, theft and sometimes cheating spouses.
(It should also be noted that if you are using this equipment to spy on loved ones it can be considered a violation of their trust and can have unintended consequences.)
Whatever your reason for using these devices there’s best practices that you should be aware of as well as some good suggestion for hiding places to use specifically for wireless home surveillance.
Best Practices for Setting up Wireless Home Surveillance Equipment
Set Up In Areas Where Things Will Probably Happen
If you have a nanny a good place to set up surveillance on them will be in your child’s bedroom, the main living room (or wherever the TV and toys are located) and if you’re concerned about theft from a housekeeper then another place to be set up is in your room where the valuables are located so in your main bedroom or wherever you keep your valuable things located.
Looking For Inconspicuous Places to Hide Your Equipment
Think about places that can actually hold the equipment but are all together inconspicuous and people will not think twice about and hardly ever inspect. Some of these non descript items will be clocks, potted plants, stuffed animals.
If you’re actually able to take some things apart and you’re not afraid about breaking them and there’s enough room inside you can even hide microphones and cameras.
There are also particular items that you can purchase that already have the recording devices hidden inside them. You should be aware that even the lower end devices cost at least $100 so it will definitely be a decision that requires some research if you want to go that route.
Think Like the People You’re Spying On
This ties into the put your camera where the action is description. But also think about at which angles the camera would need to view in order to actually catch people in the act of theft. After all if you want to press charges against someone who is stealing from you, you can’t go to the police with a video of them with their back turned against the camera and obviously doing something but they can’t make out what is actually happening.
A good exercise to do would to be to actually do the act and pay attention to your surroundings while you’re doing it, that way you’ll have a good gauge of how you should set up the cameras.
The overall thing that you’re really looking for is equipment that is easy to set up, reliable and gives you a wide view area so that you have more of a chance of catching people in the act.
